The Samruddha Bharat Foundation organised a briefing for Members of Parliament (MPs) in collaboration with NREGA Sangharsh Morcha, Peoples' Action for Employment Guarantee and Jan Sarokar. The briefing was conducted by Prof. Jean Dreze (Visiting Professor, Ranchi University), Nikhil Dey (Founder, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan), Anuradha Talwar (Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Samity), James Herenj ((NREGA Watch) and NREGA workers from across India. The briefing raised issues related to the welfare of NREGA workers including the impact of budget cuts and delayed wage payments, the effect of technological fixes on work demanded under NREGA and the consequent implications to Indian federalism. The briefing was followed by a discussion on constructive steps that could be taken to redress the issues affecting MGNREGA.
Leaders from eight political parties attended the meeting including Shri Digvijay Singh (INC MP & former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh), Capt. Uttam Kumar Reddy (INC MP), Shri Sanjay Singh (AAP MP), Shri Abdul Rahim (MP CPI-M), Dr. Senthil Kumar (DMK MP), Com. Binoy Viswan (CPI MP), Shri Jawahar Sircar (TMC MP), Shri Kumar Ketkar (INC MP), Shri K Raju (INC In-Charge for SC-ST-OBC-Minority Departments), Shri Dipankar Bhattacharya (Secretary CPI-ML), Shri Nawal Kishore (RJD Spokesperson). The meeting was also attended by eminent citizens from all walks of life.
