Deputy Chairman Hall, Constitution Club of India
The second national roundtable on adopting the Mathadi model across India was organised by National Hamal Panchayat (an all India collective of unorganised workers that strives to empower headload and other unorganised workers), and Samruddha Bharat Foundation to safeguard and empower unprotected manual labourers in urban India.
Ways in which the unchecked informalisation and casualisation of unorganised workers can be checked were discussed, both to ensure the dignity and economic security of those in the unorganized sector. One such solution discussed was to pass legislation along the lines of the “Maharashtra Mathadi, Hamal and other Manual Workers (Regularisation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1969”.
The policymakers who attended this round table included Ramdas Athavale, the Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, Prof. Manoj Jha, Member of Parliament, D. Raja, Member of Parliament, and Sunil Kumar, National Coordinator, Scheduled Castes Department, All India Congress Committee.
